Rescue Radar ll Ground Penetrating Radar Life Locator

Rescue Radar ll Ground Penetrating Radar Life Locator
Rescue Radar II radar life locating system is an indispensible tool for use in any disaster scene where there may be people trapped underground or under debris. Rescue Radar II uses Ultra Wide Band Ground Penetrating Radar (UWB GPR) to search for possible signs of life as small as a heartbeat or someone simply breathing through up to ten metres of debris as may be found after an earthquake, land slide or building collapse.
The Radar unit is controlled wirelessly by a military specification rugged laptop  , thus avoiding messy cables that may get tangled or damaged. The rugged control unit automatically displays the results for each scan in a very simple and user friendly display utilizing brightly coloured symbols and audio signals to highlight any possible signs of life detected.

Rescue Radar II is designed:
● To be as simple to use as possible with as little training as possible.
● To be easy and fast to deploy.
● To be easily portable, light weight and compact.
● To be rugged and durable.
● To operate independently with no external power requirements.
● To be multilingual

Rescue Radar II comprises two main items:1. Rescue Radar II UWB GPR unit that is built into a military grade rugged Pelikan® Case with  weatherproof seals for use in even the worst conditions any time anywhere.
2. Rescue Radar II Windows® based touch screen rugged handheld controller

To operate the user simply switches the Rescue Radar UWB GPR unit on followed by the Rescue Radar II handheld controller. The controller will automatically pair with the Radar unit using WiFi technology, then the Radar unit box is closed rendering it weather and impact proof for use in rough terrain and conditions. Rescue Radar II is now ready for use.
Rescue Radar II uses Windows7® operating environment to be user friendly and to allow for data to be moved easily to storage media and other applications for permanent record and training purposes. The hand held controller comes with all required softwares fully installed and tested. Accessories include battery chargers for both items plus a user manual and quick start guide.

Motion Detection:

Rescue Radar detects for objects at distances up to 20-30 m.  Detection range is highly dependent on the environment material.  Some materials are impenetrable by radio wave signals so depth of detection can be limited by the environment.  Normal demonstrations of the Rescue Radar system show capability of 10 m detection range through a 150-200 mm thick concrete wall.

Breathing/Life Detection:
Rescue Radar can detect life indicators such as breathing and/or related regular motions associated with biological activities.  Generally, the detection range can be up to 10 m in the same situation as the motion detection.  Obviously the life motion indication is not always as sensitive as the straight motion indication because the scale of motion may be different.

Signal Processing
Rescue Radar provides a range of scanning times.  The nature of motion and life indicator detection in a rescue situation leads to false alarms or lack of target response depending on the victim’s behavior.  Rescue Radar uses a statistical approach to assessing repeatability and reliability of motion or life indications. Repetitive cycling reduces the false alarm rate and improves probability of detection.  Scan times for Rescue Radar are user selectable from 15 seconds to 3 minutes.

Detection Volume
Rescue Radar system primarily illuminates a 45 degree cone of ground beneath the unit.  Even though this is the primary zone of influence for detection, the Rescue Radar sees out to broader angles in many situations.  Detection volume calculations assume the penetration into the material. If penetration depth is 10 m, Rescue Rader interrogates a volume in excess of 120 cubic meters.

Wireless Remote Control
Rescue Radar uses wifi to communicate wirelessly with the operator.  Normal operational range exceeds 75 m.  Wireless range is dependent on the ambient conditions in the area.  Extraneous interference from other radio transmitters in the area may limit range.  Rescue Radar uses auto channel scanning which provides a large measure of interference immunity.  Concurrent operation of numerous Rescue Radar units is common with no range performance degradation..

Rescue Radar uses long-life, highly reliable and field-proven replaceable 12 lead acid gel cells.  Battery life is nominally 5-8 hours.

Rescue Radar comes totally enclosed in a waterproof housing. The housing is hermetically sealed and serves as the tough and rugged case for both shipping and operational deployment.  The package meets or exceeds environmental standard IP-67.  Further, the operational unit contains components which tested in operating temperature conditions from -40C to 50C.

Size and Weight
Rescue Radar dimensions are 530 x 325 x 325 mm.  Base weight of the unit without battery and control PC is 7.9 kg and with all items in, the shipping weight is 12.9 kg.

User Control
Multilanguage control screens are available.  When a specific language has not yet been incorporated, the change of language can be readily added by the manufacturer to allow adaptation to specific local needs.
Displays are in simple intuitive graphical form. Optional basic and advanced displays are incorporated into all units.

How is Rescue Radar II different to traditional rescue equipment?Rescue Radar II is a completely non-invasive search system that can be used quickly and with a high degree of certainty without disturbing the search site. Conventional systems require invasive search procedures that can be inaccurate, slow and even dangerous as disturbing the site can cause a cave in maybe even killing those being searched for.

Unlike camera systems that require access into the debris to be searched Rescue Radar II UWB GPR can penetrate almost all obstacles including reinforced concrete, brick walls, soils, rubble, wood and snow - in short the scenario caused by landslides, earthquakes and avalanches. In most conditions Rescue Radar II can complete a scan in as little as 15 seconds reliably searching for signs of life as small as movement caused by a heartbeat or breathing whilst at the same time filtering out background noise caused by settling and water movement.
